Ms. Selby is currently in her eighth year with Citizen Schools and is now serving as the Deputy Director of Program for Citizen Schools New York. Prior to becoming the Deputy Director of Program Nadia K. Selby served as a Campus Director, National Teaching Fellow and Team Leader in Massachusetts, helping to lead students to discover and achieve their dreams. Nadia has a BA in Human Services from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Nadia grew up on the fine streets of New York City and enjoys singing and writing music to pass time.
Courtney Lemm grew up in Chesapeake, Virginia. He currently is in his second year as the Dean of Culture with Citizen Schools at Unison. Prior to working with Citizen Schools, he studied at Old Dominion University in Virginia. At ODU he received his B.S. degree in Political Science and his M.A. in Humanities with a specialization in developing world issues. During this time he was able to study abroad at Leicester University in Leicester, England for a year and used it as a jumping off point to start traveling the world. After graduating, he received a one year fellowship offer from a Canadian non-profit called “Education without Borders” that runs extended day learning programs in township schools in Cape Town, South Africa. This program allowed him to create a sports program, a passion that has extended to Unison with the creation of a basketball team in its first year. In his spare time he likes to play basketball and soccer along with continuing his quest for the best slice in New York.
Carter Peterson was born and raised in northern Vermont. His interest in working with children started with many different summer camp counselor jobs, including a position working at a camp for kids with Asperger’s Syndrome. After graduating high school, he attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and received a BA in Sociology. He was a member of the varsity rowing team at Wesleyan. He spent a semester abroad in Sweden, studying Swedish language, film, and culture. He has held a variety of teaching positions in Vermont, Connecticut and Boston. In his free time he likes to bike, read, and watch documentary films.
Maryann Conigliaro was born in New York, and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and Lexington, KY. She graduated from NYU with a degree in Linguistics and Italian. She spent some time studying in Italy and teaching ESL at a high school in Florence. After completing her undergraduate degree she joined the Citizen Schools program as a Teaching Fellow. This is her second year with Citizen Schools at Unison. In her free time she enjoys riding her bike around the city and reading.
Sophie Glickman is a second year teaching fellow through Citizen Schools and a graduate student at Relay Graduate School of Education. She was born and raised in a small town in southern Vermont and grew up in the public school system there before moving to St. Paul, Minnesota to complete an undergraduate degree at Macalester College. At Macalester Sophie majored in International Studies and explored a wide array of subjects. She is grateful for all she has learned at home, at school, and in her travels. Sophie believes that community, social emotional growth, and opportunity are some of the most important components of education, and she is very excited to be working in an environment that values all three.
Lorinda Mouzon attained a thorough education in New York City’s public schools. Through her quest for higher education, undergraduate degrees from Medgar Evers College and The College of New Rochelle were conferred on her with honors, as well as an MFA in Creative Writing from Long Island University in Brooklyn. Ms. Mouzon dedicated nearly ten years to the mission and vision of the New York State Education Department in many capacities, working closely with parents, teachers, administrators and staff in New York City. Venturing into the publishing world, she authored a novel, edited several projects, and served as writer and editor for a community newspaper. Ms. Mouzon returns to education filled with sensational experiences gained from accompanying her son’s classes on trips, chaperoning dances, supervising Cub Scouts, hosting youth social events and volunteering on many advisory boards. Ms. Mouzon is invigorated and eager to enhance the lives of middle school students at The Urban Assembly Unison School.
Sasha King was born in Anchorage, Alaska but raised in Tampa, Florida and Brooklyn, New York. She attended Brooklyn High School of the Arts as a Fine Art major where she was able to attend special programs at Cooper Union and the School of Visual Arts. She graduated from Hunter College in Manhattan, New York with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature and a Minor in Fine Arts. While obtaining her undergraduate degree Sasha was able to spend a semester in Compiegne, France studying French. After graduating she spent some time travelling through Asia. During her travels she volunteered to teach English as a Second Language at small schools with children aged four to ten in Ghorepani, Nepal and Bangkok, Thailand. In that same time she found Citizen Schools and began her application process. She is now a first year Teaching Fellow with Citizen Schools and Americorps and will be teaching the sixth grade at Unison School.
Alix Woodall is a first year Teaching Fellow with Citizen Schools at Unison. She was born and raised in Washington, D.C. She attended McGill University and graduated with a major in Political Science and a double minor in English Literature and Anthropology. During her time at McGill, Alix was able to study political science abroad in Florence, Italy for one month. She enjoys reading, running, and visiting her family in France.
Emily Sweeney was born in Vermont, and raised in rural upstate New York where she lived and worked on her parents’ dairy farm. After graduating from high school, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Development from Cornell University with a minor in General Education. She is passionate about mental health and socio-emotional growth in and out of the classroom, partially due to her work with Cornell Minds Matter and Active Minds, a national program dedicated to mental health awareness and reducing the stigma associated with seeking treatment. She developed a passion for service learning through her service with Cornell Alternative Breaks, where she was able to serve GALLOP NYC, a non-profit in the NYC area that serves individuals with special needs through therapeutic riding. This sparked a passion for working with children. Because of this initial experience, she took advantage of multiple opportunities to teach and observe a wide variety of classrooms and styles of teaching. She worked several summers for BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) as a 1:1 paraprofessional in various self-contained special education classrooms. She also had the opportunity to travel to Jamaica and conduct literacy workshops for fourth grade students in a partner school. She is excited to continue to work with children as part of the Citizen Schools at Unison team, using such a progressive educational model as Learning Cultures.
Isadora “Izzy” Alteon was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. After attending the Brooklyn School for International Studies, she made the trek to Waterville, Maine to attend and graduate from Colby College as a Posse Foundation Scholar. While at Colby she majored in Sociology and double-minored in African-American Studies and Jewish Studies, exploring the intersections of identity, culture, and social change. Her academic studies fueled an excitement for creating learning experiences that would allow for a richer and more inclusive campus community. Upon returning to her native stomping grounds, she became determined to create culturally meaningful academic enrichment experiences. As a Coach and Program Associate with Let’s Get Ready, a college access and success non-profit organization, she became more certain of the importance in providing access, skills, and belief to impact student success. She’s excited to be joining the dedicated community of learners in Citizen Schools and Unison.
Tiarah Coston was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Her strong desire to work with students stemmed from her first internship as an assistant teacher in a kindergarten class. She has also worked at residential facilities assisting children with developmental and socio-emotional disorders. Tiarah graduated from Stony Brook University with a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology. After completing her undergraduate degree, she joined the Citizen Schools program as a Teaching Fellow. On her free time, she enjoys traveling and learning new languages.
Lizz Crivaro was born and raised in York, Pennsylvania. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pittsburgh with a double major in Political Science and Philosophy and minors in Italian and Global Studies. Lizz is a first year teaching fellow and is excited to serve an energetic and talented group of students at the Urban Assembly Unison School this year.
Mark Brannan was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. He graduated from Davidson College with a degree in English and Education. During his time at Davidson he was an offensive lineman on the varsity football team, the secretary of the North Carolina Gamma chapter of Phi Delta Theta, and had the opportunity to spend a summer studying at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. He spent last summer working with middle school students at a lake camp and is anxious to begin a career in middle school education. In his free time, Mark enjoys reading and watching sports and movies.
Ms.Quan was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelors degree in Biology and Forensic Science. Ms. Quan considers herself an educator, environmentalist and feminist. Her passion to educate most effectively brought her to Citizen Schools. She is looking forward to a great year with Unison.
